Wishing Traditions Around the World

Beggars Soup

In the Persian culture, many years ago, people would leave a kettle by the side of the road to make a wish come true.  People passing by would throw a few coins in the kettle to be used to buy ingredients for the soup.  The more people contributed the better chances of the wish coming true.  Beggar’s soup was born.  Kettles are no longer left at the side of the road but the custom lives on in a new form.  Friends are told in advance on what day a wish is going to be made.  The morning of the wish making each invitee arrives bringing a few ingredients for the soup. They prepare it together and sit down to share the soup at the midday meal.  This allows everyone to join into making a loved one’s wish come true.
